Heart diseases in India, especially in Ludhiana have been increasing at an alarming rate. Unhealthy lifestyle choices have increased the risk of diabetes and hypertension among the Indian population making them more prone to cardiac diseases. It’s high time we note the seriousness of this disease and take immediate preventive steps to save people’s lives.

The purpose of Cmc &Hospital “Walkathon” campaign is to make Hi-Tech a healthy city and make people aware of how they can lead a happier life by adopting healthy lifestyle habits such as – Use Heart to eat well, saying no to tobacco, maintaining sugar levels, reducing stress and leading a physically active lifestyle which will promote heart health in the long run.

DR GURBHEJ SINGH  said Despite being largely preventable, cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes more than 20.5 million deaths every year.

An estimated 80% of cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, is preventable.

The main elements of CVD prevention are healthy diet, physical activity, avoiding tobacco, and “knowing your numbers”.

He elaborated some tips for preventing heart diseases Don’t’smoke because it not only kills you but your loved ones too as even second hand smoke (passive smoking) can increase the risk of heart disease. When inhaled these toxic gases can interfere with vital bodily functions, causing serious health problems. Delivering oxygen-rich blood to your heart and the rest of your body is one of these processes which gets hindered.

Eat a healthy diet as diet plays an important role, include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, plant-based proteins and fish in your diet and exclude processed sugary foods.

Make a habit of walking more.

Daily physical activity is important to keep heart disease away. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate walking or 75 minutes of brisk walking every day.

Get good sleep: Sleep is one of the most important factors, which often goes unnoticed. Research has shown that people who do not get enough sleep have a higher risk of heart attack, diabetes and depression.

Avoid stress , A report presented by the University of Rochester Medical Center states that chronic can increase high blood pressure, which can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. So, try to keep your stress levels low.      Cmc &Hospital’s team took this commendable step in educating the city about preventing heart diseases with the value of every heartbeat.

Dr.William Bhatti (Director CMC&H) thanked everyone who joined in the event and said that the Cardiology Department in CMC Ludhiana was started in the year 1984 with a four bedded ICCU. Over the last 34 years, the department has made tremendous progress and prides itself with many firsts to its credit. It was the first department in Punjab to have a Cath Lab and start invasive cardiac procedures. First cardiac catheterization, coronary angiography, coronary stenting, pacemaker implantation, ICD implantation, electrophysiological study and radiofrequency ablation procedure was performed at our cardiac catheterization lab
